Is there any way for someone with natural hair to get spikes?

By natural I mean African hair, like an afro. I've used a couple products in my hair that only put little curls into it, and I've asked a few people and they say its impossible with this texture...basically, think of tech n9ne but shorter

That's a great question, and I'm not sure, but I know that back in the day, we would use knox gelatin for spiking. And I've heard of guys using white glue too - but I have no idea if that does any damage. I'm guessing you will have fluffier thicker spikes.
