Is there any African American women with natural hair?
Hello, well I have had experience with both. Currently my hair is permed but I only perm it every other month bc of the grade of my hair. Personally my hair is easier to manage with a perm bc my natural hair is really thick and takes a long time to detangle, etc. My hair at this point is a little past my shoulders it took about six months to grow (been short for a few years), I usually keep it short but it is easier for me to manage myself when it is long. If you are one to go to the salon every other week (which is reccommended) then short could be managed. My hair has been trained enough that I am able to do it myself.
I usually keep my hair wrapped, or roller wrapped (which last longer). The less heat used the better. Sleep always in a satin scarf. No spritz at all (breaks off hair) I use olive oil products. And actually I but olive oil (from grocery store) put it in my hair for about 20 minutes before I wash it and let it sit, you will notice a difference. My beautician mentioned tea tree oil to me before but I haven't tried it, but i have heard others speak of it

Hey, you are an inquiring mind, and that is your first step in learning more...I'll answer your question this way:
1) I am not all that natural, but I do utilize PCJ Press-n-Comb in a Jar No. 1 Relaxer, and it's the lightest and most manageable perm I have ever utilized. It was suggested to me by a friend, the children's PCJ, which lasts longer than the adult types. 2 to 3 months for me, but I tend to do touch-ups every 2 months roughly.
2) I am unsure of how long my hair is, because I haven't been to a real beautician in at least 5 years, and everyone says how healthy and strong my hair looks...and everytime I see old acquaintaces they always tell me how long my hair has gotten where they are literally touching my hair...(smiles) I would say it took my hair to get to this point, about 4 years now...
3) I enjoy the naturalest look I can do with my hair which includes utilizing various hair accessories: ponty holders, clips, bananna clips, wrapping my hair if I wear it down, always keeping my hair in a loose ponty when I sleep leaving no hair out, rarely utlizing any curling hot instruments, as my hair naturally curls when in the ponty tail, etc.)
4) I have had the press and curl as well as the permed relaxed hair, and they all work for me...as everyone is different...but what you can do is get a relaxer that is similar to the press and comb style, for me the PCJ Press-n- Comb in a Jar No. 1, or African Pride, or another product I utilize ever so often is, ProFectiv.(I truly utilize their products though)
The following lists the various sites I utilize in addressing my hair concerns or finding new information:
Products I utilize:
http://www.strengthofnature.com/ (list their products and ordering information, etc. or you might find these are you local beuaty supply warehouse, also Duke products works well, but you usually have to buy them from a Salon)
http://www.motowngirl.com/index.php (great site that helps one to manage their hair naturally)
http://www.sallybeauty.com/ (Sally's tends to be in every city/state, and do carry some African American products)
http://beauty.about.com/od/blackhairstyl... (link shows some African American hair styles of various lengths)
Enjoy and Be Safe...(smiles)

Two really good sites to check out:
www.motowngirl.com
www.nappturality.com
My favorite styles were the kinky twist extensions and my plain ole afro puff.
Good luck! I've gone natural twice and I'm thinking about doing it again. The last time was from 1999-2002. Back then it was harder to find stylists and even harder too find good websites. I cut all of my hair off in Dec. 99 and it grew way past my shoulders by Nov. 02. Then some stupid lady put a relaxer on it and she ended up cutting off too much...Yeah, she was fired. LOL!
My hair is super thick. I've broken all kinds of combs %26amp; brushes. When I was younger I remember the beautician using 1 1/2 to 2 relaxer kits on my head!
The thing about going natural is that everyone's hair is different. What I liked about the whole 'process' (no pun intended) is that I was able to really see what kind of hair I'd been hiding all along. That feeling alone is priceless..It was fun to be able to wash my hair without fear of it "reverting". I could walk in the rain instead of run for cover. I just didn't have the patience or the money back then. And of course I almost fainted in the shower once in 02 while trying to wash it because there was so much! LOL...If your hair is thick with a perm, imagine how thick it'll be without one.
Natural hair is "harder" to maintain in the beginning because the average sistah ain't used to dealing with her natural hair. You can't do the same things %26amp; use the same tools as before. Patience (and practice) is key. Good luck!

I have worn my hair natural almost seven years now...... Natural hair is the way to go your hair will grow faster because you will not be putting those damaging chemicals in your hair I have nothing against anyone who perms their hair but not perming your hair speeds up the growth.... the best site for incouragement is www.nappturality.com there are so many women (including myself) on that site that wear their hair in its natural state http://www.nappturality.com/forum/ make sure you register than check out some of the online photo links and you will see plenty of hairstyles trust me you can do way more than you think at first yes it may be hard for you to maintain but if you visit nappturality on a regular basis and look at some tips and educate yourself you will have it down in to time.....some people give up because they dont take the time to get familiar with their hair.....its really nothing to it.....I loced my hair about a year ago my hair is down my back now....of course you dont have to loc your hair......u have plenty of options with natural hair just as you do with permed hair....if you still want the straight look minus the chemicals you can flat iron or press it......if you do decide to transition (go natural) but feel uncomfortable cutting all of the perm out of your hair then a good style to wear is braids with extensions
I dont know what area you are in but try to find some natural hair salons in your area ask around on nappturality and someone who is in your area will refer you to one sorry for the long reply ...good luck :)
